This is a false dichotomy. The real question is: what kind of growth? Sustainable growth that moves toward profitability is always the right answer. Pure growth without a path to profitability is just burning money with extra steps. I'd argue for a "default alive" approach — grow as fast as you can while maintaining the ability to become profitable if needed.

From a fundraising perspective, growth wins in the early stages. VCs invest in potential, not current profits. A startup growing 20% month-over-month with negative margins is far more fundable than one growing 5% with slim profits. However, this only works if you have a clear path to unit economics. We need to see that each additional customer eventually becomes profitable.

I've seen both strategies fail up close. Growth-at-all-costs killed companies when funding dried up. But being too conservative meant competitors captured the market. My advice: nail your unit economics first at small scale, then invest in growth. Make sure each customer you acquire is worth more than the cost to acquire and serve them. Once that's proven, step on the gas.

I agree with the Operator. I'd add that it depends on your market. In winner-take-all markets (social networks, marketplaces), speed matters more — you need network effects before competitors. In fragmented markets (SaaS tools, services), you can afford to grow methodically and focus on profitability earlier.
