Reaction Diffusion Hero

A living materials laboratory

Materials that grow into shape.

We culture mycelium into acoustic panels, packaging and load-bearing bricks. Every batch is grown, not molded, in seven days at room temperature.

About this block

Reaction Diffusion HeroPRO

A materials lab hero over the reaction-diffusion background component: a live Gray-Scott simulation in WebGL grows coral and fingerprint patterns across the page in the theme's paper, ink and primary colors, steering around the headline, intro and buttons while a slow drifting eraser keeps it evolving. The cursor or a tap seeds new colonies and it also seeds itself. Every growth setting passes through the growth prop; a primary Arrow Pill and an underline link sit under the copy. Pauses offscreen, grows one settled still frame for reduced motion and falls back to a CSS pattern without WebGL.

Hero216: Reaction Diffusion Hero

A full-height lab hero over the reaction-diffusion component, a live Gray-Scott simulation in WebGL that grows coral and fingerprint patterns across the section and steers around the copy block. The eyebrow, headline, intro, a primary Arrow Pill and an underline link sit at the lower left.

Base UI flavor

bash
npx shadcn add "https://ui.beste.co/r-base/hero216?email=YOUR_EMAIL&license_key=YOUR_KEY"

This installs the block to components/beste/block/hero216.tsx plus the reaction-diffusion background and the button23 and button2 buttons it uses.

Quick start

The installed file exports hero216Demo alongside the block: the exact props behind the preview above. Spread it to get a working hero in one line.

tsx
import { Hero216, hero216Demo } from "@/components/beste/block/hero216";

export default function Page() {
  return <Hero216 {...hero216Demo} />;
}

Then replace the demo with your own props. Written out, a trimmed setup looks like this:

tsx
import { Hero216 } from "@/components/beste/block/hero216";

export default function Page() {
  return (
    <Hero216
      eyebrow="A living materials laboratory"
      heading="Materials that grow into shape."
      description="We culture mycelium into acoustic panels, packaging and load-bearing bricks."
      buttons={[
        { label: "Request a sample kit", href: "/samples" },
        { label: "Read the lab notes", href: "/notes" },
      ]}
      growth={{
        inkColor: "var(--foreground)",
        paperColor: "var(--background)",
        accentColor: "var(--primary)",
        feed: 0.0545,
        kill: 0.062,
        seeding: 0.5,
      }}
    />
  );
}

Props

PropTypeDefaultDescription
eyebrowstring–Small muted line above the headline
headingstring–Headline, rendered as the page h1
descriptionstring–Intro under the headline
buttonsActionButton[][]The first renders as a primary Arrow Pill, every later one as a Button2 underline link
growthOmit<ReactionDiffusionProps, "className" | "children" | "avoidRef">–Forwarded to the ReactionDiffusion component: ink, paper and accent colors, feed and kill rates, resolution, speed, seeding, erase, edges and relief
classNamestring–Extra classes for the outer <section>
ts
type ActionButton = {
  label: string;
  href: string;
};

Behavior notes

  • The block passes a ref on the copy column to the simulation as avoidRef, so growth keeps clear of the text; that is why avoidRef is left out of the growth prop.
  • The cursor or a tap seeds new colonies, and the simulation also seeds itself while a slow drifting eraser keeps it changing.
  • ReactionDiffusion pauses through an IntersectionObserver and on hidden tabs, and grows 1 settled still frame under prefers-reduced-motion.
  • If the WebGL program fails, the component shows a masked repeating radial CSS pattern in inkColor.
  • With reduced motion the copy renders in place; otherwise it rises 18px with delays from 0.2s to 0.6s.
  • Theme variables for ink, paper and accent, as in the demo, keep the pattern in step with light and dark mode.
