A harvest day
Late September into October. You pick with the crew in the morning, tread grapes in the granite lagar in the evening, and eat with everyone at the long table.

The old press house is now two rooms with a shared kitchen and a terrace over the river. Breakfast is left at the door; the rest of the day is yours.

A grandfather and eleven hectares
António Pedreira bought the lower slopes with money from ten years in Brazil. The grapes went to the port houses downriver, as everyone's did.

The terraces rebuilt by hand
A winter of floods took out half the walls. The family and six neighbours rebuilt them in dry schist over three years, and those walls are the ones you walk on.

The first bottle under our own name
After sixty years of selling grapes, a red made from the oldest parcel, four thousand bottles, sold mostly to friends and one restaurant in Porto.

The press house becomes two rooms
The granite press had not been used since 1971. It became the sitting room of the first guest rooms, with the beam still across the ceiling.

Fourth generation, same ground
Two of us run it now. We still make only two wines, still pick by hand, and still stop for lunch at one.

Every visit is booked in advance because someone has to come down from the vines to meet you. Children are welcome and pay nothing. Prices include the wine you drink and the lunch, where there is one.

Eight days, sometimes ten, of picking from first light and treading after dark. We take a few visitors each day, feed them at the long table, and send them home tired. Places go by July.
