Three Ideas for Better Developer Productivity

Welcome back! This week I've been thinking about what actually makes developers more productive—not the trendy tools or frameworks, but the fundamentals that compound over time.

1. Write Things Down

The most underrated productivity tool is a simple text file. When you start a task, write down what you're trying to accomplish and how you plan to approach it. When you get stuck, write down what you've tried. When you solve the problem, write down what worked.

This practice creates a breadcrumb trail you can follow when you inevitably get interrupted or lose your train of thought. It also helps you notice patterns in your problem-solving—what approaches tend to work for you and which don't.

2. Batch Your Context Switches

Every context switch has a cost. Checking Slack between writing functions fragments your attention. Instead, batch your communication into dedicated windows. Write code for 90 minutes, then spend 15 minutes on messages.

The time you save by responding immediately is always less than the time you lose to context switching.

3. Learn Your Tools Deeply

Spend an hour learning your editor's keyboard shortcuts. Then another hour on its refactoring features. Then debugging tools. These small investments pay dividends for years.

  • Multi-cursor editing for repetitive changes
  • Jump to definition and find references
  • Inline debugging and conditional breakpoints
  • Custom snippets for your common patterns

Until Next Week

These aren't revolutionary ideas. They're fundamentals that most of us know but don't practice consistently. Pick one and commit to it for a week. See what happens.
