Duplicates are removed before any sorting, so the survivor is the one that came first in your input rather than whichever happened to sort first. What does trimming do?+ It removes leading and trailing spaces on each line. Worth leaving on for a pasted list, because two lines that differ only by a trailing space are not duplicates until they are trimmed.
